An Artist tends to use what is readily available to them.
For Dee, a union camera operator, that was t-shirts and bandanas!
"I started by cutting up my clothes! Having never sewn before, I had only a vague idea of where to begin but I'd once worked at a scenic shop and learned how to rough out a pattern from cardboard. Someone had given me an old Singer with a broken deck held together with tape.
I made some shapes and began to experiment.
It wasn't long before the house was full of these lil bears!
I gave them away to friends and their kids, watching for reactions,
seeing what went over well and what didn't.
From that process came Curtis and Fergus.
One large, one small,
one solid, the other made from scraps.
But who were they?"
"A friend advised me that in order to sell my bears, a story was needed.
A story?
I had never done that either.
But this project evolved by just doing the next thing that needed to be done and so here again.
I began writing some things down, bits of conversation, favorite phrases and character ideas. Over the coming months I pieced together a narrative that conveyed what I wanted to say about friendship, community and having a sense of Home.
A talented illustrator, Afshin Amini, turned my rough sketches into art."
"For years Nashville designer Loretta Harper had been generously answering my MANY sewing questions! She encouraged what I was up to, .. Eventually she came on board, cleaning up my designs and streamlining the process."
